Lions Diary Day 18

2009-Jun-15_lions_1081 Sunday was relatively quiet. The raiding party came back from the wineries relatively sober and we all headed down to the Cape Town Waterside for a late supper. We went to a slightly upmarket South African Steak House which served a variety of game from across the continent. There were varying reviews of the fare but we did meet one of the best maitre d’s of the trip who kept us amused all night with his exquisite manners.

Monday it was our first road trip. A five hour drive from Cape Town to Knysna on our way to Port Elizabeth. It really brings home the two nations under a rainbow as you travel from the affluent city centre through the townships to reach the huge farming “Garden Route” between the Cape and Port Elizabeth.

2009-Jun-16_lions_0977The journey through the mountains behind the Cape is spectacular but we didn’t have much time to enjoy it and we were all getting a bit tired and irritable as we had problems with our air con and we were getting baked by the strong sun. It is amazing how sparsely populated it is and when you travel 3-400 miles without passing any significant population centres it makes you realise how large SA is.

Stopped overnight in Knysna with one of the last truly great eccentrics of the British Colonial Rule! Our host has us rocking with laughter with his tales of daring do (unfortunately all to politically incorrect to reproduce here) and I’ll never watch Zulu or the English 2003 World Cup triumph in the same light again! The evening was topped by our hosts having an Ulster Flag flying from their flagpole to guide us back from the bar that night. So thanks Jon and Liza, if you ever get round to reading this, it was a hoot!

2009-Jun-16_lions_0993 This morning it was up early for the final 150 miles to Port Elizabeth and we made great time leaving Knysna at 8:00am and we’re now sitting in our hotel room shortly after 11:00am. Just time for this quick update and some of the huge backlog of pictures before we meet some friends across the road before heading off to the game.

Hope to meet some of the players after the game so should have news on Ferris and Bowe tomorrow.
