A little to harsh on the criticism of Ian's place kicking as the kicks which missed were all into a variable wind in both speed and direction.

While Ian did service the backline one never really sensed he was in control whereas there seemed to control exercised from outhalf when O'Connor came on but then O'Connor was playing with Boss and the pass from the base was less erratic . In fact the game showed to those who have doubts about Bosses ability that he does possess a fast pass but is only confident in using it when he knows the outhalf will not be under pressure.

Willis appears to be work in progress but shows promise.

At this point given the fact that the Portuguese were so far off the pace of the match and the referee started to protect them no conclusions are possible as to the performances of any of the Ulster Players other than they were far fitter than the opposition

I think Jennings despite the opinions of the Munsterfans is worthy of another start with Wallace on the Bench as the impact backrow sub simple reason being against the ABs the backrow will have to put in alot of work tackle after tackle and therefore a backrow substition is a must do I would prefer the backrow being strenghen rather than weaken by the substitution and with Wallace on the bench the substitution may occur sooner rather than later

I manage a similar ratio as 'The Ancient Mariner' in respect of the number of Parkie Rants / Musings I finish - you can therefore count me as a third of a reader !!

Your harsh treatment of Mini Club-man nearly provoked a reply .

the difference between the two teams was Hernandez his presence on the pitch was the factor which limited the options in the lster attack .Any possession given away within the Stade half resulted with Ulster being pinned back deep within there own half .

Stade had three drop goal attempts within the first 20 minutes two of which were sucessful playing with an out half with that ability meant that Stade had no need to play a high risk game and allowed them to concentrate on their defence .

While the ref was not prefect Ulster have played against worse refereess this year and his failure to use the video may have cost Ulster a bonus point he was not the cause of our defeat

My Ulsterman of the match has to NoC not because he was the most outstanding Ulsterman on the pitch but because I think he came of age during the match he was playing opposite one of the worlds best it would have easy to have been overawed but he wasn't and when he appreciates that fact it will provide him with confidence to be a better player

Good piece BP. Surely at some stage the Unions fron the NH will have to put a stop to this constant tampering with the laws of the game to facilitate the SH need to try and put bums on seats. ButI won't hold my breath waiting for it ..............

Can't agree with your comments about Nagusa. He has been given every chance and is obviously only in the team as Williams was instrumental in bringing him to Ulster. He has been lucky to get six games in a row what about giving McCrea a run.

cant believe that we waited so long before making a change in the backs. Niall O'Connor made an immediate difference as soon as he came on. I still think that Paddy's best position is centre

On the coaching staff, another problem was the fact that another prop was not on the bench condidering that the weather was forecast days in advance and it was one of those games that the pack was going to win rather than the backs. Going to give my MOTM to Fitzy, not because he scrummaged well because he did (nothing new there then) not because he gave his all and that he is Ulster through and through but on the sheer fact that he lasted the full 80 minutes and was absolutely dead on his feet at the end of the game, a disgrace that he was expected to last the game with no cover on the bench, Fitzy we salute you.

Excellent work, as good as any tighthead in the tight. Someone told me they were Daniel Dubrocca and Ondarts but on the evidence above Ondarts is at least right. Think I'm right in saying Ondarts now owns a bar in Biarritz which was visited by Ulster fans on a regular basis during the last tour there. Any photos of these guys?

My most frightening Irish player - Neil Francis? Only joking. Can't think of anyone over the last 3 decades on a par with some of the gentlemen mentioned above!!!! champ if I remember right was no angel either.

It's looking like Ondarts (prop) and Seigne (hooker) from the first test against New Zealand in 1990. Good spot THP.

Loved the piece above, but who would be your "Top 10 Most Frightening Irishmen" - not as easy as it sounds as we spent so many years as "plucky" Ireland.

I'll start the ball rolling with W.J.McBride but more for the Lions in South Africa rather than Ireland.

I think the Prop maybe Pascal Ondarts but am not 100 per cent sure. ?? Louis Armary

Found this article when I was googling for info on Ondatrts and thought it would be of interest to FRU members of a certrain age. I remember hearing a story about how Gerard Cholley's potentail as future international prop was first identified. Allegedly he was in the French Navy and was observed ''laying out'' allcomers in a fight in a bar in the French Naval Port of Toulon

From The Sunday TimesMarch 12, 2006

The top 10 frightening Frenchmen
STEPHEN JONES
1 Gerard Cholley (1975-79) Le Guv’nor. The baddest man ever, Cholley was frightening. In his playing days, he weighed in at 19st. These days he demolishes the scales at nearly 24st. A former heavyweight boxer, his career was a gory legend — he once laid out four Scots in the same match. Cholley believes that rugby today is soft. “There is no fear in rugby any more.”
2 Alain Esteve (1971-75) “The Beast of Beziers” was a forbidding heavy-bearded giant of 6ft 8in. Bobby Windsor, the Wales hooker, frequently came up against him. “When we packed down, I’d hear him say, ‘Bob-bee, Bob-bee’ and then this big fist would come through and smack you in the chops. To get my own back I booted him in the mush as hard as I could. He got up and gave me a wink.”

3 Pascal Ondarts (1986-91) He had the lot. He was a ferocious, iron-willed, tempestuous Basque. His first cap set the tone: he played with a ferocity that could not be tamed in the Battle of Nantes, when France beat New Zealand in 1986, a match in which All Black captain Wayne Shelford suffered a torn scrotum.

4 Marc Cecillon (1988-95) Cecillon, a powerhouse in the back row, did not adapt well after retirement, when his famous aggression no longer had an outlet. In 2004 he shot dead his wife, Chantel, at a party near Bourgoin. He is in jail awaiting trial. He told police that such was his level of intoxication, he could recall nothing of the incident.

5 Vincent Moscato (1991-92) Moscato, a hooker, played with crop-haired menace and was sent off in a foul match against England at Parc des Princes in 1992, along with Gregoire Lascube. He never played for France again and went on, in Vinnie Jones style, to become a hard man of the silver screen.

6 Armand Vaquerin (1971-1980) Another Beziers giant, Vaquerin played throughout the 1970s as a typically fierce French front-rower, but, as with Cecillon, it was his life after rugby which brought more notoriety, and tragedy. In 1993, Vaquerin shot himself while playing Russian roulette in a bar in Beziers.

7 Laurent Seigne (1989-95) Photographs taken of the French front row, Pascal Ondarts, Laurent Seigne and Louis Armary, for the 1990 match against New Zealand appeared to show that they had bleeding cuts to the nose. Nothing noteworthy in that, except that the photographs were taken before the game. It is claimed that in an attempt to wind themselves up they had butted one another. Even when he became a coach, Seigne’s novel motivational ideas continued. He once punched Gregory Kacala, the Brive flanker, because he felt that Kacala was too slow to anger on the field.

8 Claude Dourthe (1966-75) Dourthe may have been a mere back, but as one Wales captain recalls: “He would hit you high and late when his temper got the better of him.” Dourthe and his son Richard, who is also a French international back, have a place in history — they are the only father and son to have both been sent off in international rugby.

9 Fabien Pelous (1995-) Pelous was suspended in November for elbowing Australia’s Brendan Cannon. But you could tell that his heart was not in the villainy. Here we have the modern French forward: fit, disciplined — and dull. He has 105 caps and gained next to no notoriety. Shame on him.

10 Michel Palmie (1975-78) The massive Palmie was an arch enforcer. In 1978, he was banned for punching Armand Clerc in a club game. Clerc lost some of his sight in the attack. Palmie never played for France again, but was he drummed out of the sport full stop? Not quite. He went on to become an official in the French Rugby Federation.

I still thing the importance of first phase possession will see Matt as a regular in the back row.

Paddie's a cert for the centre as far as I'm concerned.

He's no openside wingforward and we seem to have a Lock and Blindside nor is he a first choice second row
(barring injuries) but he has on many occasions been our best jumper in the line

Agreed the key to the season is the mobility of the backrow and the vision of the half -backs but I don't see the players named as first choice for either

I seem to remember back 3 years ago when Ulster played quick paced games McCullough featured well, albeit from the second row.

Word is he's been focusing on his speed this summer.

I agree that Paddy needs to take command of the backline and lead by example gven that we are going out to play with two relatively inexperienced 10's. The back row will be crucial in this aea in protecting either Ian Humphreys or O'Connor.

A back row of McCullough/Diack/Ferris is certainly a mouth watering prospect in terms of ball carrying but feel we need better balance with a genuine openside in there somewhere. Hopefully Pollock continues to develop from were he left off last season. For me our back row with McCullough/Diack/Ferris competing for the 6/8 position and Dawson/Pollock at 7 would represent the ideal back row unit.

Ah, the empire strikes back!
I'm delighted that you can now read my 'missifs' from start to finish and not just the first and last lines like you used to, whilst imagining the rest .......
This is tempered by your unreconstructured attitude to honourable French men and women whom you denigrate as 'pesky frogs'. Messers Ondarts, Pampanbourde, Marconnet et Ibanez would be rolling in their collective rugby graves at the thought of one of the FRU's lesser lights being so obtuse!!

Parky, After attending ''speed reading classes'' over the summer I now can get thru' your voluminous missives in ''one sitting'' and , for once, I m glad I did !!I see you're trying to pass off this Ulster politico 's rugby team topic as your own original idea when it has already been covered in previous FRU Editions - Issue 74.

You're been spending too much time under the influence of the pesky frogs and have lost all sense of the good aul Ulster qualities of honesty and probity !!

I think you'll find that BEEB piece was lifted from the above story through the 606 message board.

Nagusa was over training with Ulster in May and I think we've been talking about "a Fijian winger" from around that time. Certainly the UAFC is mentioned in this blog as far back as June 1 in relation to this.

Hope this makes the sour grapes easier to swallow :0)

There has been much speculation that the ELVs serve to move Union closer to League code. Frustrations with 'pick and go' could well result in a "6 tackle" law being introduced. But I'm an ex-girlie-fruity-hockey player according to my rugby chaps so what do I know?

ED - Thanks Mauler. I'll change it now.

McCall wanted to freshen up the side immediately after Ulster won the league but was told there was no money. If he had been supported half as well as Williams appears to be who knows how things would have panned out.

I believe Biarritz are interested for next year. They always rated our performances against them.

I think the real problem is at the top.... Mr Reid. With McCall's inability to deal with the super egos in the team, Ulster needed a real ball breaker to keep the squad in line. I don't think we have a CE who knows how to steer Ulster into a professional era. I worry that the club is slipping backwards. Based on performances of the past 2-3 years, if Mr Reid were in business (and is that not now what URFC is?) the shareholders would be asking questions like:
where is the vision?
what is the strategy?
where are you taking us?
what is our ambition?
how do we retain our key members of staff e.g. Bowe (how did we let him go?), Ferris (1 year left)

I think that the Branch really need to ask the big questions of the man at the top, rather than let him duck and dive. IMHO appointing a big cheese like media-savy Williams is his attempt to deflect the criticism and unfortunatley McCall paid the price for his survival with his job.

On another front... I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I was watching Trimble against Connaught. Either he is carrying an illness or he is seriously over conditioned. He looked totally out of it. Could hardly run the length of himself.

Word has spread as to how good the hospitality will be in Norn Irn (either that or the strong euro makes the pints cheaper!), so the Argie numbers have increased to invasion level - now 30 in total.
I'd better get a finger out & block book those museum tickets....

"to me the problem lies further up the organization" Would not disagree with that. I recall UR (Reid) stating in the media that objectives for the coming season (McCall's first in charge) were (a) Heiny knockout stage, (b) Top 3/4 finish in Celtic League and (c) player deveolpment.
The season quickly became player development. Interestingly enough, the players being developed that season are the ones who have left this season with the exception of Matt McCullough. Perhaps the expectations were too high on McCall but he took the job on and MR publically set out his objectives which at that time the supporters bought into.

Peoples expectations of results didn't change when McCall took over from Solomons though I suppose he had developed that team so that's different? Not buying into dissent in the changing room either. Yes the players were upset and angry at results but dissent is not the impression I have got from any of the players I have spoken to.

The players still left after McCall left, to me the problem lies further up the organization. Perhaps the more politically (small p) astute Williams will be able to exploit this.

Dewi - The difference is that, after 3 years coaching and after inheriting a developing team the previous coach admitted he could not put his finger on what was going wrong, ended with tactical chaos on the pitch and dissent in the changing room off it.

During the two months in charge the new coach has spelt out a strategy for the rest of the season which is simple enough. Focus on winning the home games and use the away games to assess the capabilities of the squad with the emphasis on the younger players. I don't see were the spin is here and supporters can buy into it because they at least have had it spelt out to them however unpalatable the focus on winning a home game against Connaught.
PS: Visted Ballymena on Sunday and had an immediate urge to drive on to Portrush!!

Couldn't agree more guys. McCall got plenty of flak but suspect his man management and media image were the problem rather than his coaching.A lot of the senior players got away with things an experienced coach like Williams would stamp on. Await the new signings with much hope but it's going to be tough next year whatever way you look at it.

Off topic i know but i'm sure the good people of Ballymena will not be amused to see Matt McCullough linked with Bangor GS. Dunce's cap for the researcher!

My thoughts as well, Dewdrop. Not sure why a bad defeat under McCall was regarded as a disaster while a similiar one under Williams is seen by many as just being part of our learning curve.

I am amazed at how people's perceptions have changed with the changing of coaches. The current strategy is, in my opinion, the one Mark McCall was pursuing since we won the league. However he was pilloried by the support, who at the time had much higher expectations of success, for following this strategy.

We have just suffered two of our biggest away defeats ever in the Magners League and we are now praying for a home win against Connacht to save our season and this strategy is getting the plaudits of one and all.

Only the long term will tell if Matt is going to be a better coach than Mark, but one thing is clear, Matt is certainly much better at spin.

Let's sit back and enjoy the ride!

Because of my vast rugby experience (non-playing scrum-half and vice-captain of Ballynure 5ths), I have been recommending good signings to some big fella at UR. As a result, I expect we will soon be told of the acquisition of the famous Martian international, Roli A Flop. It will be a great advantage that he can play both tighthead and loosehead prop. Indeed, owing to the unusual form of the Martian body, he can play both at the same time. His 8 feet long middle arm is useful at lineouts, as long as we don't re-sign Paul Shields. His lack of any legs is a shame, but he can slither surprisingly quickly, although I have to admit he is scarcely any faster than Justin Fitzpatrick.

His 8 feet long middle arm is useful at lineouts, as long as we don’t re-sign Paul Shields. His lack of any legs is a shame, but he can slither surprisingly quickly, although I have to admit he is scarcely any faster than Justin Fitzpatrick.

Dear 'rugged' supporter,
I'm sure I had you in mind when I posted this:
'If some of the smug gits who frequent that board had assisted the posters on the UR forum by posting about rugby then there would have been less chance of being swamped by some of the rubbish, UAFC posters whine on about.'
PS: Your not stewarding on the URSC bus to Cork by any chance?

They came up the Lagan in a bubble, then took a bus. (Possibly a #32, - I wouldn't care to comment) SORTED!

Trucks are for Vietnamese pot-belly pigs, not Vietnamese PEOPLE! - Sort it!

All zis zeitgeist, so, soooooo much schadenfreude, too little too late!

Hans niche, if you've ever flown a stuka you vill know zat der is a little cross and circle on ze dashboard which allowsy ou to take aim at Tommy through your sights ven u are in a steep dive!! Dumpkopf!!

Mr. Dant, a further point of order. How did the boat people arive at Craigavon,--- in a boat? Sort it!

If you are going to make a tackle make sure yer body position is correct and more importantly that your head is in the right place otherwise you'll lose it!!!

(Just to introduce a rugby tone to the show, like)

Vy he vants to tok about dive bombers anyvay, ven he shood be tokking about ze rugby, Ich weiß nicht
